Kepler-10b is the first confirmed rocky exoplanet,^[3] discovered using NASA's Kepler space telescope. As of January 2011^[update], it is the smallest known transiting exoplanet, with a mass of 4.6 Earth masses and a radius of 1.4 Earth radii. Using data from Kepler, the W.M. Alle ore 19 italiane di questa sera, 2 Febbraio 2011, sarà possibile seguire la conferenza stampa organizzata dalla NASA per annunciare le ultime scoperte della sonda spaziale Kepler, dedicata alla ricerca di esopianeti, ovvero pianeti in orbita ad altre stelle. La scopo più ambizioso della missione è quello di trovare un pianeta simile alla Terra, non troppo grande e con temperature miti, insomma un luogo capace, potenzialmente, di ospitare la vita.

Poche settimane fa proprio grazie alla sonda Kepler è stato individuato il più piccolo pianeta extrasolare tra gli oltre 500 già scoperti.

Kepler-10 is a star in the Draco constellation, 560 light years away from our Solar System. The age of the star is estimated to be approximately 11.9 billions of years.^[3] In The New York Times, there is spoken of an estimated age of about eight billion years.^[4] The only known member of the star's planetary system, Kepler-10b, is of particular interest because of its small size and rocky nature. A second planet candidate, KOI-72.02, is unconfirmed.^[2]
