La scopo più ambizioso della missione è quello di trovare un pianeta simile alla Terra, non troppo grande e con temperature miti, insomma un luogo capace, potenzialmente, di ospitare la vita.
Poche settimane fa proprio grazie alla sonda Kepler è stato individuato il più piccolo pianeta extrasolare tra gli oltre 500 già scoperti.

Kepler-10 is a star in the Draco constellation, 560 light years away from our Solar System. The age of the star is estimated to be approximately 11.9 billions of years.[3] In The New York Times, there is spoken of an estimated age of about eight billion years.[4] The only known member of the star's planetary system, Kepler-10b, is of particular interest because of its small size and rocky nature. A second planet candidate, KOI-72.02, is unconfirmed.[2]
